Saving water, no matter the season

It might feel like there’s less urgency to save water in autumn and winter, but water demand doesn’t disappear because it’s cooler outside. Reservoir levels are taking time to recover after the dry weather earlier in the year.

Heating systems, extra laundry and even seasonal cooking can all increase household water use in winter.

On top of that, cold weather brings its own risks, like burst pipes and leaks, which can lead to major water waste if not caught early.

How you can save water this autumn

Even small actions at home can make a big difference. Here are some practical ways to save water during the cooler months:

  • Fix dripping taps and running toilets – a single dripping tap can waste thousands of litres a year.
  • Only run dishwashers and washing machines when full – maximise each load to reduce water and energy use.
  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth – you could save up to 6 litres every minute.
  • Use a watering can instead of a hose – yes, even in autumn!
  • Insulate exposed pipes – this helps prevent bursts and leaks during freezing temperatures.
  • Check your internal stop tap – make sure it’s fully open and accessible in case of emergencies.
  • Report leaks – whether it’s on your property or out in the street, don’t ignore it.
  • Reuse water where possible – leftover kettle water or water used to rinse vegetables can be repurposed.

What about the hosepipe ban?

The hosepipe ban is still in place across several regions to help our reservoirs recover. If you’re in an affected area, the restrictions include:

  • Watering gardens with a hosepipe
  • Washing vehicles

But that doesn’t mean your garden has to suffer. You can still care for your outdoor spaces by:

  • Using watering cans or buckets
  • Collecting rainwater in a water butt

Every drop counts

Water is a precious resource and it’s up to all of us to use it wisely all year round. The good news is that small changes really do add up. Whether it’s fixing a leak, reusing water, or insulating your pipes, you’re helping protect water supplies and the environment.

Let’s keep those water saving habits going strong whatever the weather.
